Crater Name Information Page
1. Will my crater name be
recognized by astronomers?
Common crater names — some of which
date back many hundreds of years — are cataloged by the
International Astronomical Union (IAU), along with other
celestial objects. The IAU's catalog is recognized by most
professional and amateur astronomers as the official register,
and all feature names are subject to approval by the
organization. Your crater name shall be considered an honorary
designation and, as such, The Crater Company has respectfully
requested that astronomers, as well as leading space advocacy
groups (including the International Lunar Society, the Lunar
Republic Society, the Moon Society and others interested in the
future exploration of the Moon), recognize their validity,
although they are under no obligation to do so.
2. Can I select the exact
location of my preferred crater?
No. To make this process fair and equitable to everyone, you may
select the general region in which
your crater is located (such as the Sea of Serenity, the Lake of
Dreams or Sea of Tranquility), but you may not select your
specific crater. All craters within a specified region are
issued sequentially. 3.
How big are the craters that are being offered?
Although
in situ measurement of the craters has not been carried out
yet, most craters in the regions we have selected are estimated
to measure between ten and thirty meters in diameter.
4. Will I be able to see my
crater from Earth?
Because of the relatively small size of the craters being
offered, they generally cannot be viewed from Earth. However,
the regions in which the craters are located can be viewed on
most clear, moonlit nights, either with binoculars or a
low-powered telescope.
5. Which organization has authorized the naming of craters?
The naming of craters is not controlled or restricted by any
governmental agency or international treaty and, as such, is not
subject to the legal jurisdiction of the United Nations or any
of its member-states. The Crater Company is a private,
commercial enterprise that has created the concept of honorary
crater designations, and holds the exclusive international
trademark to the process.
6. What happens if someone tries to develop the area in which my
crater is located? The
crater fields that we have selected are located in protected
areas designated for future exploration, settlement and
development by the
Lunar Republic Society and its designees. As such, the
property tracts adjacent to the selected crater fields are
planned for development — including tourism, industrial and
operations facilities — but the crater fields themselves will be
protected and excluded from any such development.
